Track Of The Day #719: Steve – Two Point Nearly Zero (Snug Platters)

steveSteve comes to us shrouded in ambiguity and mystery. Local legend has it that she lives by a railway track in Manchester; it is also said that she will only communicate by text. Yet it is very clear from ‘Two Point Nearly Zero’ that Steve – the former Rude Club and Earnest+Tom member Jane Parker – lets her music do all the talking for her.

Appearing in a not dissimilar livery to that of the Buzzcocks‘ first single ‘Orgasm Addict’, and capturing much of that self-same Mancunian pop-punk spirit, ‘Two Point Nearly Zero’ – the second single to be taken from Steve’s recent debut EP Danger! High Failure Rate – comes to the party dressed to kill. A strange, femme-fatale of a song it spends much of its 239 seconds trying to seduce the listener into thinking that it owes a debt of gratitude to The Normal, The B-52s and a rather off-kilter, English Edie Sedgewick, whilst all the while knowing damn well that it can only really be found by twisting a crackling radio dial somewhere between Hilversum and Luxembourg.

‘Two Point Nearly Zero’ will be released on 25th September 2015 through Snug Platters, the independent label recently launched by Elbow’s Guy Garvey and Fiction Record’s Jim Chancellor.

All Snug Platters releases are limited to 1000 copies and available on 10” vinyl exclusively via the Fiction Store at http://po.st/SteveVinyl
