An Axe – Love, My Evil/Let Law Be Upheld (Self-release)

lovemyevilOne minute and twenty six seconds. I can barely make a cup of tea in that time. That in that space of time Bristolian dramatists An Axe have produced a mini melodrama is testament to the quality of their work. “Love, My Evil” – and its instrumental counterpart “Let Law Be Upheld” – is a stellar single.

“Love, My Evil” is ushered in by a scatto rhythm quickstep, as the band raise the curtains on singer and guitarist Chris Nicholls, whose vocals deeply resonate. His lyrical narratives playfully x-ray wide-eyed devotion in microcosm. You could mention An Axe in the same breath as Nick Cave or Elvis Costello, but comparisons are useless and futile. I haven’t heard a single this short cause so much commotion for quite a while. Bravo AN AXE!
