PREVIEW: upcoming shows from Please Please You

You may well have been thinking that it had all gone quiet for Please Please You on the gig front, but if that were the case then you would have been seriously wide of the mark because the highly revered live music promoter has got yet another bunch of great shows scheduled between now and November in his home city of York, neighbouring Leeds, and a couple of points beyond for our delight and delectation

Please Please You’s summer season starts in earnest next week when Alison Cotton turns up at Wharf Chambers in Leeds fresh from achieving Folk Album of the Month in The Guardian, Album of the Week in The Quietus, and an Uncut 4* rating for her recent release The Portrait You Painted Of Me. Expect great things from the singer and viola player from The Left Outsides.

Come November as autumn moves into winter the “truly independent and resilient female experimental songwriter/sound-carrier” that is Jane Weaver finally makes it to The Crescent in York. This, make no mistake, is a major cause for celebration. Get yourself down there and be quietly amazed.

In between these rather significant live music staging posts lies a raft of other shows, each and every single one of which is well worthy of note. A few to mention in dispatches include John Francis Flynn, the uncompromising Irish musician who will appear at Mill Hill Unitarian Chapel in Leeds on Wednesday 10 Aug 2022. If his outstanding performance at The Crescent back in February is to be our yardstick then this concert will be a wee bit special.

Flynn’s fellow Dubliners, the brothers Diarmuid and Brían Mac Gloinn comprise the folk duo Ye Vagabonds and they feature high on our list of “ones to be missed at your peril”. They play consecutive nights in October in first York and then Hebden Bridge in the Yorkshire Pennines.

Then in fairly quick succession there is the no little matter of the Japanese psychedelic rockers Acid Mother’s Temple; Mancunian innovator LoneLady; German musician and erstwhile member of electronic pioneers Kraftwerk, one Wolfgang Flür; and another former member of a pretty well-known band, the living legend that is John Cale.
