NEWS: Young Fathers release new single, ‘Geronimo’

Mercury-winning trio, Young Fathers, are back with their soulful new single ‘Geronimo.’ After the release of their celebrated third album, Cocoa Sugar, in 2018, they went on an extensive sold-out tour, followed by a pandemic induced hiatus. Now Young Fathers, Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole and G. Hastings are back in the studio for a run of expansive, uninhibited studio sessions. ‘Geronimo’ is the first song to be completed.

This standalone single sees Young Fathers remain untethered from expectations, with one of their most soulful and heartfelt songs to date. There are echoes of Massive Attack and Tricky in the cavernous intensity of the electronic soundscape; whispered vocals, woven with loops and layers of percussive riffs, elevated by soaring, euphoric harmonies.

Speaking about ‘Geronimo‘, Young Fathers say:

“It’s a track about contrast, because life is contrast – pushing through, giving up, all at the same time. Wanting everything and then wanting nothing, then wanting everything again. It’s kind of reflective of where we are at the moment, trying to remember how to do this again.”

This is reflected in the different soundscapes within the single.

It’s the tenderness in toil, we had expelled a bunch of stuff with a lot of drive and wilder energy beforehand but this one had focus. It widened the scope again for us personally, that’s where the real high comes from. We grew another arm. We surprised ourselves. So coming back with a track called ‘Geronimo’ feels quite fitting. Just the three of us again, but still in a f*cking basement.”
