Alt-pop artist EVER – AKA Louise Smith – has released her new atmospheric EP There’s Nothing Small About Talking To You via Yada Yada Music, which boasts melodic vocals alongside smooth bass-line and rich drums. With a distinctive tone, EVER’s vocals effortlessly makes this 6 track EP hypnotise your thought processes into a nostalgic headspace.
EVER kicks off the EP with ‘Selfish’, a warmhearted pop grooving track that sets the tone and essence for the rest of the EP. Containing unique harmonies that pack a punch, Selfish could be the next big pop song with her frank lyricism. Throughout, the song structure and arrangement all come together to take the listener on a journey of EVER’s soft-hearted idea behind the EP, she writes, “Each song on this EP is a snippet of the constant conversations I seem to have with myself, internally trying to navigate my way through love, jealousy, betrayal, joy, grief… This internal dialogue was definitely heightened over the past 2 years with all the time we’ve had to spend in our own company, but luckily it led me to this collection of songs. With the title ‘There’s Nothing Small About Talking To You’ I tried to encapsulate how I can’t seem to avoid huge, deep topics when talking to myself”.
‘Natural Wonder’, the second track of the EP, goes on to explore her deep rooted pop music style with loud synth bass-lines, immaculate production and a catchy chorus. It’s almost as if this track belongs on the soundtrack of a 2000’s childhood movie, which wouldn’t be surprising with her childhood influences of 2000’s nostalgia – “I’m an incredibly nostalgic person, and whilst writing these songs I delved back into my favourite 00’s childhood songs to feel a sense of familiarity and comfort. It was joyous recording my vocals for this record because it just felt like talking, there was an ease to it I have never felt before. I tried to make some bolder choices with the production and melodies, with the aim of leaning in deeper to the music I have always wanted to make”.
The sound throughout this EP could be compared with the likes of Oh Wonder and The Japanese House, though there’s a unique touch with melodramatic sounds throughout that places you on the edge of your seat.
