LIVE: rEDOLENT / Humour – Sneaky Pete’s Edinburgh, 05/06/2024

There is something very special about seeing a band in their hometown celebrating the release of their debut album. Sneaky Petes was sold out to see rEDOLENT share tracks from dinny greet which is out now on Post Electric Records.

Humour answered the call to provide support, travelling from Glasgow at just three hours notice, as the original artist had to pull out. Now whether they were buzzing to be unexpectedly playing or feeding off the vibe of the crowd waiting for rEDOLENT, they played a tight, energised set. I still watch in awe as bands just launch into their songs without even seemingly needing to check in on one another, no “1, 2, 3, 4“. Humour are difficult to define, with their own style of wild guitar music and extraordinary vocals by lead singer Andreas Christodoulidis. The 5-piece include three guitarists and a drummer, and the energy never stopped throughout their set. Humour included a couple of new tracks and ended on live favourite ‘Mud!’ , with its abrupt end. The crowd lapped it up.

But tonight was always going to be rEDOLENT’s night. Stepping onto the stage the 5-piece received a rapturous welcome. Opening with 2022’s ‘Space Cadet’, the noise was so loud at the end the band were obviously taken aback. The instrumentation was set around the edge of the stage leaving room for lead singer Robin Herbert to jump around, which is exactly what he did! Tracks from dinny greet were sprinkled throughout the set including ‘Ravvy’,nothing bad will ever happen to me’ and the expletive laiden ‘5 days ’til the weekend’. rEDOLENT explore issues such as mental health, nostalgia and personal growth in their music. However the soundscapes they create are for the dancefloor. rEDOLENT are brothers Danny and Robin Herbert, Andrew Turnbull, Robbie White and Alice Hancock and they blend electronic beats and samplers plus guitar and drums to create their own soundscape. Robin couldn’t contain himself throughout the set, and Sneaky Petes stage got a pounding but the energy was infectious.

Highlight of the night was title track ‘dinny greet’, which means don’t cry. The crowds response throughout the set had been rapturous, showing their appreciation after every single track. There was even shouts of acknowledgement from the crowd as they recognised songs. Robin shared how in the past promoters had given them 40 tickets to sell, which they hadn’t been able to, so this sold out night in Sneaky Petes meant the world. Towards the end he also admitted they weren’t going to do that encore thing by going offstage and coming back on, although “that might be presumptuous, you might all want to leave!“. Absolutely no chance. No-one was leaving until the absolute final note of the last song ‘Funner’ , and there the inevitable chants for more. Looking forward to album Number 2 already.
