Gazelle Twin to make London debut

UK artist Gazelle Twin, aka Brighton-based artist and musician Elizabeth Walling, is to play her first London show of the year next Thursday. A dark vision; a mysterious entity; a sprawling neo-gothic audio-visual art piece – Gazelle Twin is the latest to join the rich heritage of female visionaries that includes Björk, Fever Ray and Planningtorock.

The show will take on September 1st at Electrowerkz in Angel. “It seemed like the perfect place,” says Walling, “slightly industrial, withered, a little 80s goth perhaps”. It’s the release party for the debut album, “The Entire City” – an atmospheric long player that seems to offer a window into a another world. Asked about the concept of the record, Walling says: “what binds the songs is the source of what I was immersed in at the time of writing. Sounds, words, films, books, dreams, and personal memories or experiences. Elements like civilisation, nature, destruction and religion came together naturally – but I am still really working out what most of the songs really mean.”

It’s been an exciting process bringing the engrossing world of “The Entire City” to the stage. “I knew first off that I wanted it to be visually powerful and unusual,” says Walling, “and that I wanted to make the audience feel drawn in to the whole thing, not just the music but the visual images and themes too”. To this end, the live show incorporates costume, projected imagery, and a five-piece live band that includes two drummers.
“The Entire City” has received a huge amount of critical praise for an independent release, with five star reviews in both The Guardian (“A stunning debut” ) and The Independent (“The Entire City will haunt you long after listening” ) and coverage in titles such as NME (“A triumph of art-pop splendour”), Q (“a living artwork”), Clash (“A feast for the ears” ), and The Financial Times (“An impressive art-rock soundtrack.. enigmatic and gothic”).

The album is available now, on CD, MP3 and vinyl. Further European dates follow, including a hometown show at Brighton’s Green Door Store and a slot opening for Planningtorock at the legendary Berghain in Berlin.

Ghost Eyes will DJ after the Electrowerkz set. Gazelle Twin is onstage at 9:30pm.
