A second helping of polygenesis imbued narratives, and smooth-flowing imagined soundtracks, is on offer from the multifaceted drum’n’bass producer, Subject 13. Under the mantle of Mr.Left Eye, he explores a more open field of musical genres and abstract breaks; as laid down on the last EP outing, Beats In The Key Of G Minor.
Each of the palatial 4-tracks wanders through a subtle palette of down-tempo Dubstop, trance, classical and the obligatory drum’n’bass, sealed together with a, certain, commercial appeal. There are clearly two relaxed camps of style to be found on The Awakening EP; one, the musical mapping of free-range environments, and the second, a more silky led vocal variant. ‘Underwater City’ takes the listener through a insect buzzing Asian-style storyline of flute, timpani and spy-themed sound effects: a modern day ‘our man in Manila’ theme tune, whilst companion piece, ‘Ancient City Of Kyoto’ is another Oriental filmic mood piece of progressive beats and Transglobal Underground trance-house. However, the opening sultry cooing ‘You I See’, uses the Swiss soul voice of LaMeduza; weaved into a Bonobo and early Goldie vibe backing: a single if ever I heard one.
The Mr.Left Eye project will appeal across the “urban” board, and should set up the composer for some TV and movie work: this EP should be seen as a calling card.
