Bummer album of the week: Ultravox – Brilliant

ultravox

Back in 1980, punk had already been ‘post’ed and rock guitars were being replaced by synths, as the new wave was upon us. Ultravox were one of the pioneers in that movement, but listening to it now, makes you wonder why it all happened (probably Thatcher’s fault!). In 2012, there is absolutely no requirement to regurgitate those sounds over again, but Ultravox have done just that. ‘Midge Ure has run out of money and the little inspiration he had and has rejoined the band to assist in producing a new album. It’s called ‘Brilliant’ and let me assure you it most certainly is not. Every track is a pretentious one-word title and contains predictable plinky-plonk keyboards, ending up with a bunch of songs that wouldn’t even have been credible B-sides back then. Here and now, it’s Bummer Album of the Week.
