Track Of The Day #155: Valerie June – Workin’ Woman Blues

Ready for something rootsy? This is Valerie June‘s debut single, ‘Workin’ Woman Blues’, out on 19th November. I love that Stax brassiness over what the lady herself describes as “organic moonshine roots music”. To be perfectly and completely honest, she had me the moment she uttered the words “Soo-gah daddy…” oh yeah! To go further than that though, the music, the delivery, just oozes the authenticity of days in dusty practice rooms. It’s no surprise to find out that she’s self taught on guitar and banjo, and will happily cite influence ranging from Nick Drake to the Carter Family.

Yes, I know she’s been on Jools, and let’s just hope that’s not a curse, that she doesn’t disappear the way most of his world / americana roots tips do. To the contrary, I think we’re going to hear lots more from Valerie June in 2013.
