It’s been a while since I’ve heard anything so damn pretty! Martha Bean‘s latest single, ‘A Better Man’ – due for release 27th November – is a heady blend of light and airy mingled with more than a touch of mystery. It opens in a similar vein associated with the likes of Bjork, perhaps, but it soon blooms and blossoms into something much different.
The breathy, easy vocals are entirely beguiling and you may just find yourself wonderfully lost amongst its leafy landscape, traipsing through the trees and marvelling at dewy spiders webs. There are many layers here, but you won’t hear them all at once; nor will they reveal themselves too easily – the gentle guitar pickings, barely-there percussion and strings that creep and crawl from their hiding places, becoming much more noticeable on subsequent listens. It really is a perfect Autumn track; all that’s missing is a crackling fire.
