Today, The Honest Poet returns with Love Complexity, an excellent new EP that delves deep into the darker side of love. With raw, heart on the sleeve lyricism, radiant vocals and illuminating keys, lead track ‘No Good‘ featuring Rowen Brittany, tells a powerful story of heartbreak, betrayal, and manipulation. Crafting a refreshing concoction of R&B, soul, hip hop, and spoken word, The Honest Poet’s eclectic sound is unique.
We’ve previously described The Honest Poet as “one of the stars of this scene is South Wales’s The Honest Poet replete with stirring warm vocals and positive wordplay”. He’s a vibrant talent, with a palette of exciting sonics and a emotive vocal that carries the weight of experience.
Departing thematically from his debut album Letters To My Queen’ which eloquently depicts the love story between The Honest Poet and his fiancée, the newest offering delves into the complexities of the darker aspects of love. Touching on subjects from domestic abuse (Toxic City), to the concept of being a “side-chick” (Suffocated) ‘Love Complexity’ is an arsenal of heartbreakingly authentic stories, which resonate with anyone who has experienced a challenging relationship. Collaborating with fellow Welsh artist and producer MINAS, The Honest Poet was able to sculpt a musical identity that felt right for the EP and the emotional themes it handles.
Of the EP, he said, “Love Complexity is a journey of the darker side of love, which contradicts my debut album, which was stories talking about my fiance and our experience together. This EP touches on a few subject matters, such as domestic abuse … Minas has helped me sculpt an identity musically. The creative process of this project (like my album) has been a mixture of me sending little ideas vocally and samples that I chopped up and, on occasion, going into the studio. With the EP, he understood that it was more of an emotional project. The atmospheric piano input and the sounds used help amplify.”
