Prolific, award winning Dublin songsmith from The Pale, Matthew Devereux has just released his hotly anticipated solo album House Devil, celebrating by sharing ‘I’m Not Real.’
Rich with cinematic carnivalesque keys dancing with glimmering grace between intense introspective vocals, he reflects on existential questions of existence and ephemerality singing , “‘I’m not real apparently… I am not sure I’m here right now.” It’s another work of art from this stunning ten track album. Dark, sophisticated, and atmospheric it’s a world away from the upbeat energy of the Pale, but equally as well crafted and eloquent.
The smart single cover art reflects a floating avant-garde ‘Unbearable Lightness of Being’ style bowler hat, created by the artist himself, echoing the ‘I’m not real’ theme of the single.
‘‘I’m Not Real’ is the third single to be taken from Matthew’s new solo album House Devil out now. It follows the release of ‘Haunted By ‘and ‘Uncanny Valley.’ ‘Haunted By’ is an intense, soul stirring track asking, “Who would you rather be haunted by someone from the other side, or someone from this side?” The breathless track, questions of life after death, weaving resonant vocals with acoustic strings, ghostly outros and the quivering vibrato of the theremin, while ‘Uncanny Valley’ traverses acoustic and futuristic soundscapes in a Black Mirrored reflection of our times.
Dublin born Devereux has been actively making music since 1990, beginning with the formation of the much-loved band The Pale who immediately captivated audiences with their energetic live shows which quickly led to a bidding war between numerous record labels battling to sign them up.
Eventually signing with A&M Records and releasing their debut album Here’s One We Made Earlier in 1992, the album featured the classic Irish singles ‘Butterfly’ And ‘Dogs With No Tails’ which peaked at No. 51 in the UK Singles chart in June 1992. The band received Hot Press awards in 1992 for Best Single (‘Butterfly‘) and Best Album Production (Here’s One We Made Earlier)
They have toured the world extensively and have made a dozen albums to date and recently celebrated their 30th anniversary in the music industry and released a career spanning best of collection entitled Paleanthology.. The Pale have always been known for their genre jumping musical stylings and experimenting with idiosyncratic instrumentation and continuing in this spirit of experimentation, Matthew released an album of instrumental ambient electronic music in 2003 entitled Tap, Tap, Tap which received great critical acclaim on its release
The stunning ten-song album House Devil was written, performed, and produced solely by Matthew and is available now.
