Anna von Hausswolff – Funeral For My Future Children (City Slang)

‘Funeral For My Future Children’ is the sound of imperious gloom. The second single to be taken from Anna von Hausswolff’s second album Ceremony, it bears all of the hallmarks of that record’s quietly beautiful magnificence. Lyrically it remains in that gap between humanity and nature, those moments we celebrate between birth and death; musically it creates the same widescreen Cinemascope of grand chamber pop. Shackled to a desolate, clattering rhythm that is eerily redolent of Joy Division’s ‘Decades’, the faux-operatic cadence of Hausswolff’s voice soars high above the waltzing stealth of her church organ.  ‘Funeral For My Future Children’ will do precious little to trouble the official singles chart, but that does not prevent it from being one of this year’s most singularly haunting songs.

Rating: ★★★★½
