Track Of The Day #912: New Arcades – Where We Were Before

With Stranger Things becoming a phenomenon thanks to its John Carpenter meets The Goonies vibe – and its haunting, synth-laden soundtrack turning into a thing of legends – there’s definitely a growing taste at the minute for all things 1980s.  Dean Canty and Adam Sullivan have fond memories of ’80s cinema, though probably not quite the vicious horror of The Thing.  Instead, as New Arcades they craft glittering pop gems that wouldn’t feel too out of place playing over the credits of a high-class 1980s rom-com.

Their latest single ‘Where We Were Before’ is more than a bit retro, with vintage synth sounds washing over it like a wave.  Held together by some driving beats and the emotional, soaring guest vocals of Sarah Bird, it has the cinematic, atmospheric edge of M83 doing ‘Midnight City’ with just an extra hint of the nostalgia factor.  Don’t be surprised if New Arcades break through with a major pop hit sometime soon.
