NEWS: Agnes Obel unveils video for ‘Golden Green’

Danish singer-songwriter Agnes Obel recently unveiled her brand new track ‘Golden Green.’  Taken from her upcoming LP Citizen of Glass, out on 21st October via Play It Again Sam, the song is typically ethereal but is punctuated by plucked strings and arpeggiated sound.  Obel says the track is about “how the mind can develop stories and change reality whilst under the influence of envy […] In a sense it is a negative longing with a creative potential for good and/or bad – novels are written in the mind from this perspective.  The song is inspired by the book ‘Envy’ from 1927 by the novelist Yuri Olesha.”

The single’s new video, directed by acclaimed visual artist Jonas Bjerre (who also fronts Danish band Mew), captures Obel within spectral visions and darkened landscapes.  Pulsating lights and wisps of fire punctuate the video, with Obel often rendered as an uncanny, partially obscured animated alien being.

Bjerre said: “I was honored to take on the task of making a video for this beautiful song […]  The bells that emphasize the rhythm through the song, for some reason they made me think of blinking lights, and glass – glass being a recurring theme in Agnes’s new songs.  As she told me more about the song, I started having ideas for some kind of internal world, maybe a world inside someone’s head, where various thoughts and feelings are in opposition, depicted as animated versions of Agnes, struggling to find harmony.”  Watch below.

In November, Obel heads out on a small, four-date tour of the UK. Details below.

26th November – Anson Rooms, Bristol
27th November – Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London
29th November – Town Hall, Birmingham
