Track of the Day #959: Gentlemen - Showdown

Track of the Day #959: Gentlemen – Showdown

Everybody loves a bit of Electric Light Orchestra, and it’s also hard to resist a slice of psych-pop too.  So the gift that Australian/UK outfit Gentlemen have gifted us with is truly special.  Paying homage to one of their own favourite bands, they’ve boldly tackled ELO’s 1974 track ‘Showdown,’ transforming it into a glistening psychedelic number that would pack a punch on any dancefloor.

Speaking of the dancefloor, as the B-side to ‘Stray Rider,’ the video for ‘Showdown’ follows on where that clip left off.  Directed by Edward Housden and carrying a distinctly 70s vibe, our intrepid hero enters the world of karaoke and dodgy dancing in a strobe-lighting filled night to remember.  Soon though he’s met by a familiar face and things get a little bit tense.  If you’ve ever been a bit wound up by someone who’s a little bit too keen to show off their moves then you’ll emphasise here.  If you’re not already the one eager to pull a few shapes to Gentlemen’s killer cover, that is.

Drummer Geno Carrapetta set the scene: “The party continues…  We pick up where we left off from with ‘Stray Rider’.  Our American Tan King (Nigel Barber) and his Minder (Roshan Singh) have had a busy day of walking, tanning and weightlifting (See previous clip Stray Rider).  Now joined by their mysterious friend (Nick McCarthy from Franz Ferdinand), the guys gather to let their hair down and enjoy a evening of frivolity.  However there is jealousy and tension in the air.  An Intimidation Dance is on the cards.  A showdown, if you will… But this story has a happy ending. I think everyone is going to get along just fine…”  This is one showdown you don’t want to miss.
