The Canadian-Ukrainian duo Ummagma – comprising vocalist Shauna McLarnon and multi-instrumentalist Alexander Kretov – have been around for a more than a decade now. In that time they have produced a couple of albums and various singles, EPs, collaborations and remixes but you strongly suspect if its lead single ‘Lama’ is to be our yardstick then their forthcoming Extended Play LCD may be the record that finally places them on a much wider musical map.
Remixed by the former Cocteau Twins’ guitar maestro Robin Guthrie, ‘Lama’ takes the Cocteaus’ original template for ethereal indie-pop and transports it into a modern day mirror world. Emerging from a dreamy haze of electronics, percussion and whispering bass McLarnon’s graceful, compelling voice and Guthrie’s trademark cascading guitar begin to inject a gradual momentum. At this point, ‘Lama’ takes wing and flies. It is a song that confirms restrained power and a gentle shimmering beauty can peacefully co-exist.
Ummagma release their new EP ‘LCD’ on 15th September via Label Obscura (digital, cassette) and Somewherecold Records (CD). The EP will be available for pre-order on the duo’s Bandcamp.
