Welsh Language Music Day 2022 - Geraint Rhys

Welsh Language Music Day 2022 – Geraint Rhys

Are you doing anything for Welsh Language Music Day 2022?
I will be releasing a couple of videos of covers on the day so watch out on my social media for these.

What is the first song in the Welsh language you remember, and what does it mean to you?
Growing up in South Wales, welsh hymns were more prominent than pop music in our home so the first one I remember hearing is Calon Lân  which was, and still is, a staple in our home and breaking into it any time of the day is very acceptable.

Why do you think the day is important, both inside and outside Wales?
More than anything I think it’s great to give a wider platform to Welsh language music particularly to those in the UK who don’t realize how vibrant, diverse and productive the scene really is. It’s been great to have a further platform to share our stories beyond our own little world.

What is the best venue welcoming Welsh music, and why?
If you’re coming to Swansea then your best bet is to visit Tŷ Tawe who often have a good programme of acts throughout the year. A venue which was fundamental in my development as a performer was Gwdihw in Cardiff which is sadly no longer with us RIP Gwdihw.

What are your top three Welsh Language songs, and why?
This constantly changes but currently I would have to say 1) Bwncath – Fel hyn da ni fod 2) Eve Goodman – Pellter 3) Swnami – Dihoeni

Which Welsh albums are you most looking forward to hearing this year?
Dafydd Hedd is putting out a lot of interesting things at the moment so it will be exciting to see what else he has coming this year.

What do you have coming up in 2022?/
I have a new collaboration with Droja which will be released on the 11th of February and then have a new Welsh language track penciled in for a March/April release.
