Wrexham trio Gallops have unveiled their second single of the year ‘Death Square‘ following on from the July release of ‘Boolean Who?’ It’s part of a planned series of club-ready singles rather than being releases ahead of a third album.
Whereas their previous single was a massive high energy track, this release – complete with a dreamy, almost ambient mix from Worriedaboutsatan – feels much more intimate. If that was designed to get you onto the dancefloor, this feels more like a track designed to keep you going before the dawn comes up.
Speaking about the track, the band’s Mark Huckridge says: ‘Death Square’s parent series originated before lockdown, back when memories remained fresh of innovative audio-visual performances centring on work from 2017’s much-praised Bronze Mystic album.‘
He explains further: ‘Lockdown shut me down creatively and it was only towards the end that the juices were flowing and I opened up these projects again. I found I was coming back at them from a different perspective, and possibly a darker one.‘
While technology is an important part of the Gallops sound – so much so that it might be said it’s a fourth member – Mark’s keen to emphasise that they are thinking hard about how to put this across in a live context: ‘For us at least, keeping live drums is vital, though Liam [Edwards] will be using a more hybrid approach. Things seem to be pushing more into that area, of us embracing technology more and more and letting it drive things and see what happens.‘
