Recently relocated to Richmond, Virginia where she recorded her eponymous debut album, the Nashville singer Natalie Prass has just unveiled a video for ‘Why Don’t You Believe In Me’.
The concept for the video was created by Crass’s best friend since her teenage years, the multidisciplinary artist, Erica Prince, who alongside Tiona McClodden co-directed the video. A vaguely disturbing abstraction in which Crass’s make-up brush shape shifts the contours of her face, the video’s haunting qualities are at odds to the tender beauty of the song.
One of the nine sumptuous songs that appear on Natalie Crass’s first full-length offering – a record co-produced by Matthew E. White and Trey Pollard for White’s Spacebomb records – ‘Why Don’t You Believe In Me’ is a quite astonishing slice of pure country soul in which the beautifully understated arrangements of the legendary Hi Records albums of Al Green and the pure white soul of Dusty in Memphis are harnessed to the bruised heartache of country. Sheer and utter perfection.
It is little wonder then that Natalie Crass has very quickly moved from being a member of Jenny Lewis’s backing band to going on tour with Son Lux, Hiss Golden Messenger, Ryan Adams, and San Fermin this spring.
