Track Of The Day #975 : Team Picture – Back To Bay Six

Since its inception some 16 months ago, the Leeds record label Come Play With Me has spoiled us something rotten with a cracking run of split seven-inch vinyl releases. The community interest company was launched as a singles club in September 2015 and since that time has showcased a lot of the fantastic music that is coming out of West Yorkshire right now.

The sixth such record in this illustrious series – in what The Wedding Present frontman David Gedge refers to as “the ultimate format for pop music” – comes to us courtesy of Leeds five-piece Team Picture and fellow city folk Laminate Pet Animal.

For their part, Team Picture give us ‘Back To Bay Six’. One of their oldest songs, they recently submitted it to a Come Play With Me Emerging Talent Competition and much to their surprise and absolute delight it won. Following hot on the heels of what were three very rapid digital releases in the second half of last year, the band’s guitarist Josh accurately describes ‘Back To Bay Six’ as “a sprawling brainsplosion of lo-fi genre-touring fuzzpop.”

‘Back To Bay Six’ comes clattering out of a swirl of sonic obfuscation in a blur of guitar, drums and voice. As if it had some rabid hellhound hot on its trail, the song keeps up a pretty relentless pace for more than 200 seconds before shaking the animal off and then considerately slowing down to give us all chance to catch up and draw our breath. On this evidence alone, Team Picture have both the tunes and the energy to go far.

The single launch featuring both bands will take place on February 9th at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds.  Tickets are available for this show from CPWM’s website.
