Track Of The Day #860: ZoZo – International Waters

Track Of The Day #860: ZoZo – International Waters

The Leeds-based initiative Come Play With Me is about to release the third record in its ongoing series of 7” singles.  Following in the illustrious footsteps of first Harkin and Cinerama and then Fizzy Blood and OFFICERS comes ZoZo, yet another cracking band to fly pell-mell off this particular West Yorkshire production line.

Five young men who look as if they probably don’t know any better first showcased ‘International Waters’ at last year’s, now sadly defunct, Fell Foot Sound Festival.  You sense that it could have been conceived over a bottle of Buckfast, a bowl of fruit and some early Mothers of Invention records.

Buzzed through the entrance door by some relentlessly scratchy guitar and a wailing saxophone, ‘International Waters’ holds on for dear life to much of Frank Zappa’s art-rock playfulness and surrealism whilst resolutely refusing to let go of its own identity.  If you make it to the end of the song, you will have undoubtedly helped ZoZo achieve their mission of helping yet another listener learn how to tap at least one of their toes in unison.

“I heard you say to him/That there could be no other way/It’s strange and powerful/And yet it’s not just that…”

And they are absolutely right, for it most definitely is not.  It is something else altogether.

‘International Waters’, coupled with Esper Scout‘s ‘Gaps in the Border Fence’, is out on 27th May 2016 on Come Play With Me and can be purchased HERE alongside all sorts of other CPWM goodies.

The single is well and truly launched into orbit at the world famous Brudenell Social Club in Leeds the night before. All details of the event can be found right HERE
