Track Of The Day #878: The Van T’s – Blood Orange

This band are on their second EP (forthcoming Coming Of Age EP) and ‘Blood Orange’ is the first track to be released.  First impressions? Holy crap this band is loud!  Ear achingly loud…  I love them already.  Inspired by ’50s surf music, but powered by ’90s Super Fuzz, Big Muff distortion, The Van T’s have developed into a contemporary harmonic four piece than love nothing better than causing tinnitus whilst at the same time getting your foot tapping.  Bordering on the My Bloody Valentine side of noise and the Lush side of vocals, The Van T’s really are a breath of fresh air with their disrespect of volume control.  And I mean that sincerely.

I really don’t think there are enough bands out there at the moment that defy that “turn it down!” scream from the sound engineer.  Well it never did Dinosaur Jr or Husker Du any harm did it?  The Van T’s seem intent on paving their own way through current vanilla-flavoured bands that keep their instruments and vocals to a respectful minimum.  This band has a great ethereal/Siouxsie Sioux-like delivery that really sets them apart from the recent crowd.  It’s good stuff!

Coming Of Age EP is out 1st July on Bloc+Music
