Track of the Day #901: The Linedots – Small Talk

About a year ago, London duo Evangeline Ling and Kevin Emre – better known as their moniker The Linedots – posted ‘Waterfall’ to their SoundCloud page, a lo-fi alt-pop gem that was all too short.  Nearly 12 months down the line and the pair are finally back with their first single proper, ‘Small Talk,’ a bold step forward for the pair’s sound.

While ‘Waterfall’ was a laid-back, almost unassuming pop number, ‘Small Talk’ packs a punch with its heavy drums and synths that masquerade as strings.  Ling’s vocals are laconic and nonchalant, offering a particularly intriguing counterpoint to the track’s otherwise forceful nature.  Much like the chitter-chatter that the track references, Ling and Emre say: “Small Talk is about everything and nothing at all – it is up to the listener to decipher their own meaning.”  While ‘Small Talk’ might not have any particular lyrical significance, it’s clear that the track as a whole denotes a huge step forward for The Linedots.
