Track of the Day #845: Shark Dentist – Florentine (Make Me Smile)

Don’t you just love it when a band simply nails it?  North London four-piece Shark Dentist have already attracted plenty of attention with a quirky sense of humour, an irrepressibly youthful approach to guitar-driven pop music and a Leicester City-like work rate that’s seen them put in more than 100 gig appearances in the 18 months they’ve been together.

But nothing they’ve done before indicated they were capable of producing anything quite as classy, moving or downright unforgettable as this. ‘Florentine (Make Me Smile)’ is a full on anthem, a heartbroken tale of the eternal on/off love affair that refuses to die while remaining eternally doomed.  As singer/guitarist Grady pours his heart out his comrades operate the kind of loud/quiet razor guitar aesthetic that made The Pixies so compelling, adding a hint of Pavement‘s swagger and Blur‘s pop sparkle along the way.  Job done, in other words.

‘Florentine (Make Me Smile)’ is out on 7″ single on  Ra-Ra Rok Records on 3rd June, with a Single Launch Party 2nd June at Shacklewell Arms, London.
