“Back where things started off” said Eddie Argos, to an early days acquaintance in New Cross the other night. Some reviews are already calling Art Brut’s new album, ‘Tragic Brilliant’ (produced by Francis Black) their best so far, and they’ve just sold out a week long residency at London’s (very cool) Lexington, and this is their Stateside send off show. Exciting times.
Having been in the local vanguard of art noise that continues to spawn movements, Art Brut are heroes to a whole new generation of students on the dance floor at Goldsmiths S.U. tonight. Supporting are punky, newer wave contenders; Anita Maj then Edit/Select. The former, kicks off the show with a “rocky bangles” set thats winning friends in USA. The latter, musical activists gaining interest on the continent. Both win hearty cheers from the home crowd. Then, the main event. Lights go down, energy goes up, people go nuts. Art Brut have arrived. It’s a poser free zone of fans and peers, past, present and future, united in frug by a full on set that mixes new LP thrills with original live faves. Eddie is still talking to the kids.
