Track Of The Day #1021: Childhood – Californian Light

Childhood hit indie-pop gold back in 2014 with their debut album Lacuna, which was one of the year’s best records, including their wonderful debut single ‘Blue Velvet’. Their chiming guitars and smart ways with a melody saw them as a natural choice to support Johnny Marr, who was most complimentary of their work.

Fast-forward to 2017 and the band, led by charismatic frontman Ben Romans-Hopscraft are on the verge of releasing their second LP, Univeral High. Teaming up with feted producer Ben H Allen III (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective), the band have delivered the first pointer to the direction of their new sound in the single ‘Californian Light’. And what a direction – the psychedelic palette of yesteryear replaced with a soulful vibe that has more in common with Curtis Mayfield than their janglesome peers.

‘Californian Light’ is a breathtakingly beautiful track which will make the second album one of the most highly-anticipated records of the Summer (it comes out on July 21st).

The band play a number of festivals including The Great Escape (19th May) and Latitude (16th July). They also join Whitney at The Ritz, Manchester on 4th June.
