Totemic figures in experimental music don’t come much more powerful than Michael Rother, the guitar-wielding polymath whose work epitomises the revolutionary spirit of the German avant-garde. The questing, innovatory vision he launched via Neu!, Harmonia and in his solo work has resonated across all quarters of alternative music in the last fifty years, finding early fans in Brian Eno, David Bowie, Devo and Iggy Pop before its influence blazed a trail through the work of Sonic Youth, Stereolab, U2, Primal Scream, Radiohead and far too many more iconic figures to list.

The debut Neu! album remains one of the most epochal documents of an eternally inspiring era, and reaches its half-century in 2022. Groenland Records are commemorating this by releasing a picture disc and a cassette of the first Neu! album, followed by a new boxset containing the first 3 NEU! albums plus 2 tribute albums with reworks & remixes inspired by Neu! for which musicians and bands like The National, Mogwai, Idles, Stephen Morris (New Order/Joy Division), Yann Tiersen, ManMan, They Hate Change, Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Fink and Guerilla Toss contributed new recordings.

A noted fan of Michael Rother’s work, Paul Weller enlisted him to play on his krautrock-influenced 2012 album Sonik Kicks, and they’re welcoming him along to return the favour on what’s sure to be a momentous celebration of the radiant delights and universal power of Neu!

Michael Rother: “I´m thrilled that Stephen Morris, Alexis Taylor and Paul Weller are joining me and my band on November 3rd for our concert celebrating 50 Years of NEU! at Clapham Grand in London. It´s going to be a truly unique event, and I hope to see you all there.”

Alexis Taylor: “It’s a great honour for me to play some of my music before Michael Rother and a celebration of Neu! at 50. I’m thrilled to be a part of what promises to be a fantastic evening of music. With Leo Taylor (The Invisible, Gramme) and Susumu Mukai (Zongamin, Vanishing Twin) on drums and bass respectively, we will lean into the more experimental and groove-based sides of my solo music – and I can’t wait to hear Stephen Morris’ DJ set as well as the headline act of course!”

Stephen Morris: “As someone who has always loved the music of Neu! and Michael Rother, I am both excited and honoured to be taking part in the celebration of 50 years of Neu! at the Clapham Grand. They are a very special band and the 3rd of November will be a very special night. Don’t miss it!”

Paul Weller: “Michael & Klaus are true originators. 50 years ago they were making the sound of tomorrow!”
